Levick & Emons Win Shaftesbury Open 50

Levick & Emons Win Shaftesbury Open 50

Held on the F2/50 in Cambridgeshire for the second year, the 107th running of the Shaftesbury Open did not disappoint. With promised winds of 20mph gust up to 36mph a number of rider DNS, no doubt due to the challenging conditions. A respectable field nevertheless took to the start line to fight for the Shaftesbury Centenary trophy, this year it being awarded jointly to the fastest man & fastest woman. Although some abanonded after feeling the cross head wind at its worst approaching Caxton Gibbett, overall the wind was manageable and meant super fast times on the reverse track.

Jack Levick (Rose Race Team) put in a blisteringly fast 1:38:28 to put almost 8 minutes into second place Lee Williams (FTP Race Team). Claire Emons (...a3crg) rode to a 2:00:16 geting painfully close to breaking the 2 hour barrier, beating Emiy Varley (Hitchen Nomads CC) by 2 minutes.

Shaftesbury's own Kevin Baumber and Rob Young rode for the hosts, Kevin found extra power and some good sensations compared to the same track in May but lost some time in the conditions while dipping under the 1:50 mark - Rob's imperious form could only be stopped by a early puncture. The club's amazing volunteers under Gary Jackson's organisation had an early start but did a wonderful selfless job. Phil Hodey's Shaftesbury/HCS Tech online timing system with live real time splits and results worked fantastically once again, the official timekeepers, some of the most experienced in the country, audited the final results and agreed every one saying to use them instead of their own as they matched anyway!

A well earned slice of cake was enjoyed back at the clubhouse by all! Well done to all those who rode, and special congrats to all of our winners!
