Spoco entries are open!

A message from Graham Hurrell, (Basildon CC) promoter of the SPOCO South East competion...

May I take a quick opportunity to introduce you to the Sporting Courses South East competition.

We select some 30 or so events of distances of 10, 25 and 50 miles that are all on single carriageway roads. The courses are, as the title suggests, ‘sporting’ with hills and corners. They are exciting to ride and the more like a roller coaster the better. Your speed will vary from an eyeball popping crawl to breath taking.

To qualify for SPOCO SE, Senior and Veteran riders should complete one distance of 10 miles, three of 25 miles and two of 50 miles - Junior riders should complete three distances of 10 miles and three distances of 25miles - each event chosen from a selected list published each year.

Unlike other time trial leagues, the Sporting Courses competition depends on where you are placed in the field. For 1st place you are awarded 120 points, 2nd place 119, 3rd place 118 and so on. The fastest rider wins, as always, but the variables of weather and difficulty of terrain are negated. There is no advantage in riding a dual carriageway course on a windless day whilst being sucked along by the turbulence of the passing traffic.

It is my sincere belief that this is the best introduction to ‘open event’ time trialing and ideal for aspiring young riders as much as it is for the old sweats. .

  • You may ride the minimum of six selected events - or all of them - but your 6 best placings count - giving you leeway to improve as the season progresses.
  • Scratch awards are given to the three highest placed male and lady riders.
  • A keenly fought handicap competition runs too which is based on the previous season’s score.
  • As in triathlons, age category awards, in groups of a decade are also given to Junior, Senior, Vet Senior vet, Super vet, King vet and even Superking vet categories -
  • A Club Team trophy, and medals, are also awarded.
  • Awards consist of a large engraved metal/enamel medal, or medallion, in gold silver and bronze to keep and trophies held for one year
  • You are kept abreast of the progress by email after each qualifying event.
  • A website is also updated periodically: www.spoco-se.org.uk .
  • There’s a facebook page for open feedback.

Registration is required and an annual joining fee of £8 that covers the costs of the awards and engraving of medals and trophies.
